Track maintenance

Te Matuku Bay Scenic Reserve has an Auckland Council walkway running through it. As of mid 2026 the walkway is closed to the public — but the work of maintaining it, and the network of paths and bait lines used for pest plant and animal control, continues year-round.

Keeping these tracks passable is essential for our volunteer teams to access the reserve efficiently. Good tracks mean faster baiting rounds, easier pest plant patrols, and safer working conditions for everyone in the bush.

What's involved

Track maintenance tasks include:

  • Clearing overgrowth and cutting back encroaching vegetation
  • Brushcutting grass and sedge on open sections
  • Marking and improving bait line paths through denser bush
  • Identifying and reporting track hazards or damage
  • Longer-term track improvement projects as opportunities arise

Track work is physically demanding — you'll need to be fit and comfortable in rugged bush terrain. Some tasks require use of tools such as brushcutters or loppers; training can be provided. It's also deeply satisfying work, in one of the most beautiful and ecologically significant parts of Waiheke Island.
